An advocacy group for pedestrians: something every city needs but very few have.
In Seattle there is a small nonprofit dedicated to protecting and increasing walkable communities. This nonprofit is called Feet First-and while officially started by a group of professionals and concerned citizens in 1995-it did not have full time staff until 2003.
What makes this nonprofit of note is that in many cities the trend has been to focus on public transportation relying on green initiatives and less on the need to promote an inclusive and mindful community. Pedestrians not only save the city from carbon imprints, but they also encourage and demonstrate an active and safe community. With pedestrians, you have people outside of their home and connecting consciously or even subconsciously with their neighbors. They are more likely to shop locally, report crimes, and engage verbally with their neighborhood. The focus on health and carbon footprint is important, but there are many more benefits to lifting up pedestrians within a city.
